چکیده
Lauded as one of the greatest developments of 20th-century medicine, the “wonder drug” penicillin reshaped the treatment of infectious diseases and altered patterns of mortality. As a result, the breakthrough that preceded penicillin—the development of the sulfonamides—is often overlooked.1–3 Using records from Sydenham Hospital, amunicipal communicable disease institution in Baltimore, Maryland, in which nearly 75% of patients were children, we show the transformative role that sulfa drugs played in pediatric practice through a case study of meningococcal meningitis.4

Minocycline in the chemoprophylaxis of meningococcal disease.
An outbreak of meningococcal disease occurred among basic combat trainees at Fort Lewis, Wash., in the first 3 months of 1971. After five recruits developed meningitis within a 2-week period, 8,721 recruits were given 100 mg of minocycline every 12 hr for 5 days. No new cases of meningococcal disease occurred for almost 5 weeks. Then six additional cases occurred among recruits who had entered ...
متن کاملPathophysiology of meningococcal meningitis and septicaemia.
Neisseria meningitidis is remarkable for the diversity of interactions that the bacterium has with the human host, ranging from asymptomatic nasopharyngeal colonisation affecting virtually all members of the population; through focal infections of the meninges, joints, or eye; to the devastating and often fatal syndrome of meningococcal septic shock and purpura fulminans.

Arthritis secondary to invasive meningococcemia is rare and has been described as a direct result of bacteremia or as immunoallergic-type arthritis, related to the immune complex. Only a few case series have been reported. This multicenter study aimed to describe the clinical characteristics and therapeutic outcomes of arthritis secondary to meningococcal infection. We performed a 5-year retrospe...
متن کاملThe influence of antibiotics and sulfa drugs on Bacillus larvae, cause of American foulbrood of the honeybee, in vitro and in vivo.
American foulbrood is a disease of the larvae of the honeybee caused by a sporeforming organism, Bacillus larvae White (1920), and is considered the most serious of all bee diseases. The unusual resistance of the spores to heat and disinfectants (White, 1920; Sturtevant, 1926; Burnside, 1940) has resulted in the development of a variety of methods for control based on their effectiveness in des...
متن کاملPractice patterns of infectious disease physicians for management of meningococcal disease.
BACKGROUND Although empiric treatment regimens for acute bacterial meningitis are well established, there are many uncertainties regarding management of meningococcal disease. A survey was conducted among infectious disease specialists to assess meningococcal disease practice patterns and availability of antimicrobial susceptibility testing for Neisseria menigitidis. METHODS An online survey ...
